ABRSM Music Theory, Level 1

12 classes; Tuesdays and Thursdays; September 29-November 5; 3:30-4pm

This introductory course corresponds to ABRSM Exam Level 1.  We will introduce and explore foundational music concepts:  time values, treble and bass clefs, Major keys C,G,D,F, Scale degrees, and tonic triads, and we will explore this material’s relationship to the music we play.

This course will also prepare students for the International ABRSM Grade 1 Music Theory Exam, should they choose to take it.  For more information, visit https://us.abrsm.org/en/

ABRSM’s Music Theory exams aim to give students a thorough understanding of the building blocks of music, starting with the basics of rhythm and notes, and going on to cover harmony and counterpoint, composition, and a broad knowledge of western music, including composers and their works, structure, style and period.

*Due to the academic nature of this course, we recommend students be in grade levels 6-10 in order to fully enjoy the class materials.  Exceptions will be made for academically and musically advanced students in grade 5.

This Course is a Prerequisite to ABRSM Music Theory Course Levels 2-8
